+++ Great tool, good value +++

I got this microscope to use as a tool for my homeschooled daughter. It is a great learning tool. I have not had any problems with it (as indicated by other reviewers for a different model.)

It is nice to be able to view slides with my daughter as she is studying them. The pictures the camera produces are wonderful.

The traditional features of Celestron 1600X LCD Deluxe Digital Microscope are good - lighting, stage movement, filters, lens. Even my husband, who is a pathologist and looks through a microscope everyday of his life is impressed with this one!

This is a fine, modern microscope for the proce.

+++ Inferior LCD touch screen design +++

ive had two of the Celestron LCD Deluxe Microscopes. the first one was returned because just out box i turned LCD monitor on and could not turn off. so i had to unplug the device, which would not turn back on. so i returned for replacement. now ive just received replacement model and the touch screen does not respond on this one regardless of suggested methods of resetting the machine. so, obviously this is a poor design. hopefully i can return for refund and use for less expensive higher quality microscope camera, notice the resolution on the Celestron 1600X LCD Deluxe Digital Microscope is rather low and can not be interchanged nor replaced.

+++ Great Microscope - The One to Get +++

This is truly a great scope. Here are the pros and cons:

Pros:
-Decent sized. Not as big as a scary lab scope, but not a small as a joke scope for a little kid.
-Bright light. Pictures very clear.
-Interesting prepared slides.
-Good selection of specimen (gum media, yeast, and shrimp egg). Yeast is surprisingly active.
-Extremely fast shipping and delivery (shipped/old from Adorama Camera)
-Contains a light pen to view physical objects (needs batteries which come with the scope).
-High magnification levels.
-Easy focusing.
-Comes with blank slides AND cover glass.

Cons:

-THE PICTURE LIES! This microscope is actually white, not silver. (MINOR)
-Must be plugged in. Not that major, but batteries would be nice. (MINOR)
-Digital microscope software only compatible with Windows. (MAJOR)
-Packaging was extremely tight. Very tough to get things out of the microscope carrying case without feeling like you're going to break it. (MINOR)
-Cover glasses are very sticky and stick to each other/the slides. (MINOR)

With only one of the cons being major, I'd definitely suggest iOptron ST-80 Digital Microscope to anybody looking for a good one.

+++ Defective optical eyepiece +++

I purchased the iOptron ST-80 Digital Microscope as a Christmas gift for my 10-yr old son. The microscope is reasonably acceptable and functional for the price-range. However, the eye-piece adapter for taking digital-images did not pair with any of three PCs to which I attempted a connection (running W7, Vista and XP, respectively). Each connection-attempt generated a pop-up message saying "the device has malfunctioned", or "the connected device is defective and should be replaced".
After several attempts to contact the mfgr, my calls were finally returned - and the digital imaging eye-piece was promptly replaced - and now works fine. Although a little slow in their response, the mfgr addressed the problem to my satisfation (so I'll change my rating).

+++ Very nice; great value +++

Solid construction and all the basics. Easy set up for the most part (I had trouble only with setting up the safety stop). The optics are fine for home use, and it's easy to use. The small set of prepared slides was a very nice surprise.

Only two things would make it a little more user-friendly: coarse and fine focus adjustments on the same dial (similar to the stage adjustment), and a switch on the light source.

Overall I would definitely recommend Celestron 44104 500x Power Advanced Biological Microscope for the hobbyist; it's a great value for the price.

+++ Fire Hazard +++

Well I was hoping the review about Fire Hazard was wrong when I ordered this as I read all the reviews that were on at that time. However my experience was that the slides arrived damaged and the electric illuminator had the burning smell and was defintely overheating. This is the only item that I've ever actually returned to Amazon in the history of all items I've ever ordered from Amazon. Without the damaged slides and the overheating problem I think it would be a wonderful item however. Damaged Slides are easy to replace however the overheating issue is a very serious issue as it could catch on fire and cause your house to burn down or wherever you are using it. I hope to one day be able to afford one of the $500 - or above Microscopes as I'm still very interested in a microscope. But in the meantime I will choose to live without Celestron 44104 500x Power Advanced Biological Microscope as this microscopes overheating problem is too dangerous.

+++ Hard to beat its total value in a beginner microscope +++

Let's cut to the chase: If you're looking for an inexpensive microscope for younger children, the Duo-Scope would be very difficult to beat for features, quality, and cost.

After reviewing several sources on inexpensive microscopes, I took a chance for Christmas on this less documented model. I'm glad I did.

PROS:

* Solid construction. Despite its light weight, it feels like a coherent whole and has no rattling pieces. The objective lenses click nicely into place and the mechanics have a silky feel when operated. My First Lab Duo-Scope Microscope considerably betters the microscope I had as a child growing up in the Sixties, so some items ARE better made today than yesteryear.

* Smooth focusing wheels that don't clunk through the mechanism's gearing.

* Permanent, bright light sources from two separate LED bulbs. Far better than mirrored scopes.

* A pointer in the optic field--a nice addition to a low cost scope.

* A plethora of accessories including four prepared slides, six blank slides (including concave/well), slide covers, stains, tweezers, scalpel, lens wipes, vinyl dust cover, and more--just about anything you would need to get started on a basic level (except for three AA batteries).

* A detailed manual of a higher quality than most will expect, especially considering the microscope's country of origin.

CONS:

* Made in China.

* The upper and lower lights cannot both be turned on at the same time for maximum illumination of semi-translucent objects.

* When using the highest power objective, the optic field is still too dim.

* Users can ram the highest power objective into the slide without realizing it, breaking slide covers and possibly damaging the objective (This is a problem on most inexpensive scopes. The stage does have some give, though, so while slide covers may break, it's doubtful slides will.)

* Though the ocular appears to be on a swivel base, it's not, making it less convenient for two people to share the microscope.

* The diaphragm, which controls the amount of light reaching the stage, doesn't appear to make much difference on most of its settings.

*No secondary fine-focus knobs. (However, this won't be missed because the scope's macro-focusing mechanism is smooth enough to compensate if given a light touch.)

All things considered, the cons are minor.

Some have said My First Lab Duo-Scope Microscope is mostly plastic, but that may not be the case. The main upright portion that features the focusing rail of the scope is definitely a powder-coated metal. Considering that this part is the one that truly matters for overall integrity of the microscope, I'd have to say that this makes the scope an even better deal for the money.

All the positives of this entry-level microscope make for a very good purchase that should last for several years. It's also a great deal for parents testing the waters to see if their children would enjoy owning a microscope. Better to invest in an inexpensive, but good quality, scope than to pay hundreds more and end up with something that gathers dust on the shelf.

The box recommends this scope for children 10 and up, but with parental instruction and supervision, children a few years younger would enjoy it, too. (Steer clear of the scalpel that comes included, though!)

A worthy product that would be a fine gift to a budding scientist.

+++ Okay for the price +++

I purchased this as a gift for my 9 year old son. He likes it, and finds it fun exploring the microscopic world. This thing seemed pretty much durable, and could hold up to some beating. I see no good reason for a microscope manufacturer to not put lights on both the top and bottom of a platform, as I find it to be a real necessity to see anything down there. So I thought, it's great that My First Lab Duo-Scope Microscope product has that feature.

The only thing I didn't like about this is that, we can't get the highest magnification to work. I don't know why. I didn't bother that much to figure out what was wrong. My son is pretty much happy with what he can view so far, but we're probably missing a lot for not seeing things on the highest magnification.
